Four password rules that will make all the difference:
Only 4 characters to remember, since you already know the core password. Voila!
PS. Never write down the core password ... and never save it in a document on your PC etc. Keep it in your head only!
- Here is a surprise ... "P4$5w0rD" is no more effective than "password". Password cracking software will take less than a second even when you use this type of character substitution. Why is that?
- Well, Password LENGTH is the key to a good password. Any combination less than 10 characters is easy pickings for cracking software. But 14 characters, or more, would take over 1,000 years to crack. Here is a site that will show you how long it would take to crack a particular password using a single modern PC. Notice how important LENGTH is. BTW don't actually use your own current password there ... just use it to learn what makes a good password.
- AVOID using the same password for multiple sites and services. If someone does get your lone password they have access to everything ... OUCH! "But how can I remember zillions of different passwords?", I hear you say.
- Well, choose a core password using three random words with caps, such as, TeamsRoverPlastic or BingoBattleTango. That will be easy to memorise. Then add a few unique characters on the end for each different site. Some sites require a mixture of letters, numbers and other characters, so use the unique part at the end for those too.
